A Review Of The Nostalgia Electrics Microwave Oven

I love beautiful, unique things, especially those that are vintage or retro. I absolutely love the recent trend towards designing appliances to look like they were made in the 1950s. The specific style is referred to as mid-century modern, a design style that focuses on smooth, futuristic looking shapes. Circles and rounded accents were used often and added chrome was always a plus. This is where Nostalgia Electrics took its design inspiration from when making its new line of microwave ovens. I had to know if are these new appliances are all looks or if they deliver all the modern conveniences we have come to expect in a good microwave oven. I decided to try the Nostalgia Electrics RMO-400RED for a period of four weeks so that I could write a review for anyone interested in this microwave oven.

The model I choose, RMO-400RED, is the red version. This was based purely on personal preference. All the Nostalgia Electrics models are identical in all things except for the color. So consider this a review of any of the four models offered by Nostalgia Electrics. The four colors available at this time are black, red, pale blue and white. The first three options cost about $120; the white model costs more at this time.

I excitedly unpacked my new Nostalgia Electrics microwave oven. First, I must say that this microwave oven is absolutely beautiful, even more so than I expected from the pictures. The glossy red finish is gorgeous. The chrome accents sparkle. The handle has a solid, well-constructed feel to it. I personally prefer a handle to a push-button door opener. I think it lends a more high-end feel and also leads to less problems with malfunctioning down the road. The old-fashioned dial feels sturdy and not cheap at all.

I started out by making popcorn. The unit was quiet and popped the popcorn perfectly. There were very few unpopped kernels and no burnt ones. This model is 800 watts; less than I am accustomed to. Because of this, it did take a little longer to complete the popcorn, but I think I can wait an extra 40 seconds for my snack.

I found the controls to be intuitive and very easy to use. I actually find them faster and easier to use than the modern looking keypad controls found on most models. The biggest downside to this model that I noticed during the review period is its diminutive size. One thing I regularly use my microwave oven for is defrosting large pieces of frozen meat, such as a whole chicken. There just isn't enough room for that in this model. I also found it to be too small for large family sized casseroles that I normally keep pre-made in the freezer for a ready-to-go dinner. Because of this, I moved the Nostalgia Electrics microwave oven from my home to my office halfway through the review period.

http://bakingreview.com/breville-bov450xl-mini-smart-oven-with-element-iq/

Everyone in my office loved this microwave oven. The size and power are perfect for individual lunches and heating water for beverages, which are the two things done most often when it comes to cooking in our office. There had been a bigger model there originally; this unit freed up some counter space, which we all appreciated.

Overall, I really do like this microwave oven. I think it is a perfect addition to my office and it will stay there. However, this is a somewhat compact microwave oven and as such may not be well-suited to large families. Pay close attention to the size if you are interested in this model. See how it measures up to microwave ovens you have used in the past. Some people love a smaller unit because it doesn't use up as much counter space. Most compact microwave ovens have a cheap feel to them; this model does not. So if a small unit is what you need, this may be the right choice for you.

A Review Of The Panasonic Prestige NN-SD688S 1.2 Cubic Foot 1300 Watt Sensor Microwave Oven

I recently tried out the Panasonic Prestige NN-SD688S 1.2 cubic foot 1300 watt sensor microwave oven for a period of two weeks. I did this so that I could provide an in-depth review to anyone considering purchasing this model. I banished my normal microwave oven to storage and used this Panasonic model instead for the duration of the review period. I did this so that I would get a clear idea of how this unit performs with regular usage. Here is my review.

This Panasonic Prestige microwave oven will cost you less than $150, including the shipping. That is low to mid range as far as price goes; expectations for this model should be formed accordingly. I removed my new appliance from the box. I was pleasantly surprised by the solid and sleek high-end look. This model looks like it costs a lot more than it does. It has a stainless steel finish and is controlled by a stainless steel dial and push buttons, rather than the usual plastic-clad keypad. The buttons have a very solid feel to them when pushed, adding to the more expensive feel of this product. The see-through window is dark and reflective when not in use. This unit is somewhat large; it has 1.2 cubic feet of interior space and comes equipped with a 13 inch turntable. This Panasonic model offers a multi-lingual display readout with choices for English, Spanish and French.

I researched this model to see if there were any problems or issues I should look out for. One complaint kept popping up: the display is impossible to read unless you bend down and view it straight on. This problem seems to have been resolved by Panasonic. The display is now easy to read from all angles and across the room.

I love popcorn and use my microwave often for popping it. This model gives you three different options for bag size to choose from to ensure the popcorn is perfectly cooked. It is also equipped with moisture sensors which aid in proper popcorn popping. These two features, along with the power of 1300 watts, lead to great popcorn. Almost all the kernels were popped every time and I never had burnt pieces. The moisture sensors also work well for other items, such as vegetables or leftovers. This microwave knows exactly when the food is done by measuring the moisture levels.

http://bakingreview.com/breville-bov450xl-mini-smart-oven-with-element-iq/

This model boasts inverter technology and inverter turbo defrost. The maker claims this leads to more even cooking and thawing. What is inverter technology? I checked out Panasonic's website and read all the information that came with the microwave oven. Everything just stated that inverter technology cooks more evenly, but not how or why. So I called the company. I was told that when most microwaves run they alternate between 100% power and 0% power. A microwave set to 50% power just splits the time evenly between 100% power and 0% power. This can lead to accidentally cooking portions of your food during a thaw. Inverter technology allows for a true and constant power reduction, where the unit is able to run at 50% power through the entire heating cycle. Does it work? Yes! That is one of my favorite features on this microwave oven. It properly thaws food without actually cooking it.

This microwave does everything you need a microwave to do and it does it fast. I had to adjust all my cooking times during the review period to account for the shorter cooking times. I am accustomed to a 1000 watt model and this 1300 watt Panasonic microwave oven cooks things approximately 25% faster. This model also has a delay start setting which I like very much. I can get everything ready ahead of time and the microwave will turn on when I need it to.

Knowing How Electric Pressure Cookers Work

The electric pressure cookers are the next trendy kitchen additions. People are happy about these products' efficiency and convenience. A typical pressure cooker that uses electric power contains an inner pot. This pot has different sizes, which determine how big or small the outer casing would be. Usually, their holding capacities range from three to six liters. This does not mean that you cannot find larger inner pots.
These are available, but at a higher price. To ensure durability, manufacturers make some inner pots with stainless steel and clad their bottoms with copper. This ensures consistent heating when using the electric cooker. In addition, a person who would rather pay less money can get a model with an aluminum inner vessel. The only problem it would give him or her is cleaning, because aluminum is usually not dishwasher safe.
You can easily remove the pan and return it without any hassles. Another feature that your electric pressure cooker would have is a lid with a tight sealing gasket. When fastened, the lid and the inner pot create a very airtight compartment. When you connect the pressure cooker to the power supply, the inner-pot would warm up. This heat then increases the pressure inside it. If the lid were not tight enough, the pressure being generated in the compartment would force it up.
This is why some manufacturers prefer a special lock mechanism involving a float valve with a pin. As the swelling pressure pushes up the lid, the pin exerts more tightness. It works in a similar manner as the latch lock. As you explore the pressure cooker market, you will notice some differences in the construction of the lid lock. Safety is a major consideration when one is cooking with any electric or gas appliance.
Most pressure appliances have high-tech safety valves and pushdown pressure release systems. You can find very innovative safety mechanisms on many modern instant pots. All the items that utilize a float valve with pin are secure, but not necessarily in the long run. At some point, large amounts of heat and pressure generation could destroy the pin. Once the pin functionality fails, then it means that the lid would not sustain itself in a locked position, if pressure mounts excessively in the inside vessel.
Additionally, you can find some cookers that use a pressure release-regulating valve. This would only let go of excess pressure when the pot is in use and sealed. Another major feature that this equipment has is a heating element situated on the outer casing. It also consists of a control box with a role of regulating heat and pressure of the inside vessel. It controls both temperature and pressure sensors because it has a microprocessor. Moreover it has a timer to help you prepare food properly.
It would warn you if something goes wrong by producing some sound. Most electric pressure cookers models operate at a pressure range of about seventy-to eighty-kilopascal. This is equivalent to a heat range of about 239 to 244 degrees F. That is why it is quick and it is able to save your time. With this cooking appliance, you can prepare broccoli, dry beans, corns, and other related foods. It would only take two minutes of your time to prepare vegetables. The dry legumes might take extra time.

Knowing Electric Pressure Cookers - Pros and Cons

When thinking of ways to prepare food faster, while not sacrificing quality and nutrition, investing in a pressure canner or cooker is one obvious choice.
Now you may also be wondering if you should get a standard or electric model. This article will help you understand and avoid the pitfalls and appreciate the convenience an electric pressure cooker has to offer vs a traditional model.
CONS:
Lets start with the "Cons" since they are a bit more subtle, but understanding those will help you better contextualize the "Pros".
1) Less durability: Typically electric models do not last as long as their non-electric counterparts. You can see this reflected in the shorter warranties on an electric vs. traditional model. The reason for this? With more complicated parts and electronics on an electric pressure cooker there is more possibility for failure. Many newer models come with extra electronics, press button displays, and other convenient features. Generally electronics do not like the excessive heat with which these appliances operate. Durability varies by brand and quality, some are better than others, but as a rule it is true electric models may not last as long.
2) Lower PSI: To operate a pressure cooker it needs high pressure, measured in pounds per square inch (PSI). Higher pressure makes steam hotter than normal and allows food to cook faster. Often times electric pressure cookers, especially the older ones, cannot achieve the 15 PSI that is standard for traditional models. I'm sure It has something to do with the heating units, as well as safety concerns and costs factors. Whatever the reason, you have to be cautious when getting an Electric model, they often top out at 9-12 PSI. Lower PSI means lower temperature and thus slower cooking. Moreover, it is an annoyance since most pressure cooker recipes assume 15 PSI, so adjusting can be a pain. Basically, get one that goes to 15 PSI if you can.
3) Historical Safety issues: This is more of a problem with older models, and I think honestly, the lax attitude of users resulting in user error. Because electric pressure cookers are so easy, people often push limits unintentionally or leave it unattended for long periods on ill advised settings. Some have noted that electric pressure cookers tend to have less redundant safety valves than the traditional designs do. This is true, you may want to stay away from those models. But some of the horror stories can be explained by misuse. If you accidentally over fill with liquid (a big no-no) it increases the likelihood of clogging and overflow. Compounded that with not being in the room to see the overflow occurring, and you can see how big disasters might occur, generating bad rap through user error. Don't worry, If you follow the manual, especially on new models, you will likely never have an issue.
PROS:
The Pros are much more straightforward:
1) Ease of use and Convenience: This is huge, with all the automatic timers, food specific cooking settings, PSI adjustment and other features that can be loaded onto an electric model, they save a bunch of time. Also, some will argue this cancels out the lower PSI issues, since if the cooker can be started with the touch of a button and walked away from, who cares if it takes a bit longer to cook?
2) Consistent heating: Electric designs have the heating source inside them. A traditional cooker may have to deal with various cooking surfaces such as gas range, electrical coil or glass top. When it comes to a gas range, traditional pressure cookers perform masterfully, but some people report problems with electric ranges. The reason is that pressure cookers want an even, steady heat. If temperature bounces around too much then pressure is inconstant which makes calculating cooking time difficult, risking over or under cooking. Often people over-correct with glass top and coil ranges due to the nature of how they heat. I've never found a problem cooking on a glass top, but even If you do run into this problem you should be able to overcome it with a little trial and error. But that's part of the argument for electric pressure cookers, why go through the trouble? Just get an electric pressure cooker to begin with.
So there you have it. You now know some of the not so obvious considerations when choosing between an electric and a traditional stove top pressure canners and cookers. Don't agonize over it too much. If nothing above jumps out at you then go with whatever model you find that offers the best quality at your price point. Remember: if you stick to good quality brands, and follow the manual, you should not encounter any difficulties, whether you go traditional or electric.
