How To Deal With Stress In A Stressed Out World

Stress is nothing new to the human race. It has been around for quite some time. However, over the years it seems that we have found more reasons to be stressed. The economy. Our jobs. Family. The list can go on and on. Studies have shown the effect that stress can have on our lives. High blood pressure, insomnia, depression, just to name a few. It's how we deal with that stress many times that matters. We all are stressed to a degree. Either that or we live on a self-made island which does't sound too bad at times.
There are some things we can do to help deal with that stress of which I can attest to.
1. Stop and smell the coffee. Or roses. Or whatever tickles your sense of smell.

I have found that smell has a profound effect on me. When I'm stressed, a lavender scented candle can do wonders for me. Or a little lavender oil on my temples helps especially if I'm suffering from a stress induced headache.

2. Take a deep breath

Or several. However many you feel is appropriate before you body slam yourself into something. This will only add to your stress. Believe me, I know.

3. Give yourself a time-out

For real. Sit down in your favorite chair or spot in the house and relax. Just don't do this in front of the tv when the six o'clock news is airing. You will be stressed before it's over. Trust me on this.

4. Think happy thoughts

Just make sure you're not doing what I told you not to in no. 3 above. Turn off the tv and think about the things that make you smile. Come on, there's got to be something. Sunshine, babies blowing spit bubbles, a sweet love song. You can do this!

5. Listen to the music

Music can have a huge impact on your mood. Whether it be soft or upbeat. Certain types of music have always created an image in my mind. Soft music sends visions of lavender fields in the summer. While upbeat can sometimes invigorate me. It makes me want to snap my fingers and puts a spring in my step!

6. Become a bird watcher

This has always been a winner for me. There's nothing like watching a graceful little bird fly from tree to tree.

7. Go for a stroll

Walk to the mailbox. Walk a block. Or walk a mile. Walking is exercise and we all know that exercise is good for not only your waistline but for your sense of well being. Just don't run into the neighborhood bully. You know, the one with four legs and chases his tail.

8. Take a bath

Even a 10 minute bath can help. I have used lavender scented body wash or soap. Some soft music and a fragrant candle can do wonders!

9. Read a good book

A book with a good plot has pulled me into its pages many times. Helps me forget about what stressed me out to begin with!

10. Color your world

I repainted my living room last year in a soft mint green. Talk about comforting! I've gotten a lot of compliments from friends. They tell me it's so relaxing. And I have to agree with them. My bedroom is a pale lavender which is also so relaxing. While you may not have time to do this any time soon, It's something you may want to consider. It could pay off on those days when you're stressed. Colors affect our thinking and our moods. Yellow is also nice. Or whatever suits you.

While we're never going to live in a stress free world, there are ways to help us. So, go ahead and take that bath, read a book, or shoot even walk the block! Just watch out for that four legged bully who chases his tail.
